'Oti' lounge chairs designed by Niels Gammelgaard, Danish designer, for Ikea in the late 1980s. When you think Ikea you don’t automatically think of high quality and design. But Ikea actually used well-known designers such as Verner Panton and Niels Gammelgaard to design some of their collection. This chair, model Oti, from 1986 by Niels Gammelgaard is considered a true Ikea vintage design Classic nowadays. Niels Gammelgaard was born in 1944 in Copenhagen. Studied Industrial Design under Erik Herløw at the Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts) in Copenhagen, graduating in 1970. In 1978 Gammelgaard co-founded with Lars Mathiesesn Pelikan Design, which has designed and seen in production literally hundreds of products ranging from small pencils to children's tricycles to hospital beds. Pelikan design is best known however, for the design of contract furniture - offices, waiting halls, rest area - and can name many of the most prestigious Danish furniture manufactures among its clients, including Fritz Hansen, Bent Krogh, Fredericia and Erik Jørgensen.
